Brittany's largest inland lake — 12km long, surrounded by woodland. Kayak, paddleboard, and pedalo rentals; designated beach swimming areas; cycling trails. Excellent for a full group day mixing water sports and picnicking.

72-hectare reservoir — the closest fishing spot to Plémy. Bank fishing for pike, perch, carp, and roach. Shaded perimeter paths for non-fishing walkers. Buy a carte de pêche online before your trip (€14/day or €30/week).

Wide tidal beach at the edge of the Saint-Brieuc Bay nature reserve. At low tide the sand extends far out. Dogs welcome on beach and in water year-round with no restrictions — the closest beach and the most dog-friendly.

Scenic sandy beach backed by green cliffs near the Morieux estuary. Good for coastal walks and beach games. Dogs permitted year-round, lead required July–August.

Fine golden sand in a sheltered bay framed by rocky headlands and coastal pines. Smooth water at high tide — great for swimming and sunbathing. One of the best sand beaches in the Côtes-d'Armor.

Golden sand beach with views to the Saint-Michel islet chapel — walk across at low tide (check tide times). Erquy town is Brittany's scallop capital (coquilles Saint-Jacques). The port has excellent fresh seafood lunch spots and a fish market — combine beach and town into one outing.

Brittany's most dramatic headland — rose-pink granite cliffs dropping 70m, a working lighthouse, and sweeping views to Jersey on a clear day. No swimming but spectacular GR34 coastal walks. The Plage de la Fauconnière below offers a sheltered cove. Dogs welcome on all clifftop paths.

A 14th-century castle perched directly on a sea cliff, completely intact with a working drawbridge, towers, and a cannon platform. Only 2km from Cap Fréhel — combine both into one outing. Views back along the coast are spectacular. Dogs allowed throughout. Low entry cost (~€7 adults), takes about an hour.

Your closest town — one of France's officially recognised most beautiful villages. 14th-century ramparts, cobblestone streets, the Église Saint-Mathurin, and local craft shops. Perfect for a short morning or evening walk. Dogs on leads welcome throughout.

Heritage town built around a grand château and a central lake. Granite timber-framed houses, river walks, and a lovely old town centre. Good relaxed half-day.

Good shopping, large Saturday market, and the Haras National — 19th-century stud farm with guided tours, carriages, and equestrian demonstrations in summer. Book stud tours ahead for August.

Departmental capital — Gothic cathedral, dramatic viaducts, pedestrianised shopping, and contemporary street art. Good for a half-day urban outing, or to pair with the Decathlon/Carrefour hypermarket run in Section 1.

One of Brittany's finest medieval towns — 3km of intact ramparts overlooking the River Rance, half-timbered houses, and a stunning portside quarter. The Rue du Jerzual drops steeply to the port past artisan workshops. Portside restaurants are excellent. Dogs very welcome. Worth the drive — full day.

A working Cistercian abbey set in peaceful woodland — you can see it on two of the maps in this guide, it's that close. The wooded grounds are open to walk freely, the medieval abbey church is open to visitors, and the contemplative atmosphere is a great contrast to a theme park day. About 30–40 minutes for a gentle stroll. Dogs on leads welcome in the grounds.

The oyster capital of Brittany — a genuinely unmissable Breton experience. Walk along the port, buy oysters straight from the producers' stalls for a few euros each, and eat them on the harbour sea wall with a glass of Muscadet. The best ones to ask for are Cancale No. 3 plates. Can be combined with a Saint-Malo visit (15 min further) for a full day out.

Fully indoor heated water park — slides, wave pool, lazy river, and a dedicated kids' splash zone. Brilliant for a wet day when you still want water fun without being rained on. Dogs must stay in the car but it's one of the best rainy day options for teenagers.

The intra-muros walled city of Saint-Malo is worth doing in any weather — the streets are narrow and the rampart walk sheltered by the city walls. Great covered arcades, restaurants, and the Musée d'Histoire de Saint-Malo inside the castle. Combine with Cancale (15 min) for an oyster lunch on the way back.

One of Brittany's best WWII museums — tells the story of the Breton Resistance and the American liberation of Brittany in 1944. Excellent for teenagers; very well laid out with vehicles, weapons, and personal stories. A proper half-day museum.

Dinan's covered medieval arcades, stone-flagged streets, and the Rue du Jerzual artisan workshops are perfectly enjoyable in wet weather. The castle keep (Donjon de la Duchesse Anne) has great interior exhibits. Portside restaurants are indoor and excellent. A rainy Dinan is still a great Dinan.

There are several escape rooms in Saint-Brieuc — ideal for splitting the group into competing teams (teenagers vs adults). Book online in advance. Can fill a 2–3 hour slot on a wet afternoon. Pair with a visit to the Carrefour hypermarket or Decathlon to make the drive worthwhile.

Sometimes the best option is to embrace it. Drive to Lamballe's covered market hall or Moncontour for fresh bread and pastries, pick up local charcuterie and cheese, get a bottle of Breton cider, and spend the day at the gîte playing cards and board games. Sometimes a slow day is the best day of a holiday.
